The headphones were ringing. Or were they? No, her Ipod's volume was just too high. Reaching into her pocket, Alex moved her fingers counter-clockwise to adjust her volume to a more decent level. Unfortunately, the music did barely anything to soothe her nerves. This party she was going to would be the first one she went to that would have alcohol since she quit drinking, and she didn't know how difficult it would be to refuse the drink. She'd never had the guts to before.
Easing her mind without even knowing it, Alex absentmindedly fiddled with some sea foam colored light behind her. Even though she couldn't see it, somehow that color was the most relaxing for her. Laughing to herself while almost to the park, she thought of how she could mess with the people at the party by using her powers to make her teeth a funky color. But which color? There could be a lot of fun ones, puke green, burnt orange, neon yellow, or maybe even better, neon pink.
But that line of thought was instantly cut off and the light she was playing with faded away. Worry swept over her, a different and bigger type than before. The park was still and quiet, no sign of a party at all.
This was all a set up.

The long shadows of trees stretched around Kairi as her lithe feline figure crouched among them. She had been waiting within Tulgey Woods in her cat form, knowing something was about to happen. Ahead of her was Alex Hart, a fellow student at Red Rose High, who had been given false information about a party by none other than Cheshire Jr. Kairi had known him to trick other students into going to the park after dark where he would attack them for fun. Finally, she was going to put a stop to it. As fallen leaves and pine needles crunched softly beneath her paws, a sharp wind whistled through the branches, causing her fur to fluff out. Shaking her tiny body vigorously, Kairi snorted and turned her attention away from Alex to make sure her fur wasn't sticking out. It was a rather silly reason to lose focus.
As Kairi smoothed out her fur, the sun dipped further and further under the horizon until the only thing illuminating the park were nearby street lamps. Knowing that Alex's attacker would be arriving soon, she slipped under a nearby tree root and waited. She could hear the sound of leaves crunching underfoot as someone approached. Finally, Cheshire Jr.'s sullen face was caught by the light of the street lamps. He passed directly in front of Kairi before making his way to the girl in the park. The she-cat crawled out from under the root and waited for Cheshire to make a move, but was surprised when he suddenly called out, "Yo!"

Hair went flying through the air as Alex turned toward the sound. Of course, that was after she jumped practically a foot off the ground in surprise. Without moving a muscle, she made it so no sound came from her headphones. Then, she studied the figure that had just called in greeting to her. It was Cheshire Jr., the one who invited her to the party. She should've guessed he would be up to trouble. But what were his intentions? Her mind raced with the possibilities. Rape? A trick? No, I don't think he would've clearly showed his presence. Unless there are others? Alex thought. Following her thoughts, she made it so any sounds would be magnified around her.
Making it so her voice carried over behind Cheshire Jr., just in case he didn't know of her powers, Alex declared, "If you come closer I will either blast your eardrums out of make you blind." Unfortunately, her voice was a little shaky, so she wasn't sure if it had the full effect. He was also extremely attractive, which distracted her a little bit. If only they could be at the park together on different circumstances.

Kairi watched the scene carefully, slightly amused at Alex's reaction. Whether the other girl had a power or not was completely unknown. At least, it was until Alex threatened Cheshire Jr. She can control light and sound? Both powers were unheard of the Kairi, since she'd never met anyone who could do either. As she thought this, her eyes shifted to the cat-boy's back, where he held a switchblade behind it. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he said, appearing friendly. "I'm sorry. I lied about there being a party, but I didn't think you would come if I just asked you to meet me here." His words sounded sincere and earnest, making Kairi shiver. He didn't normally sound like that. Cheshire then took a chance by taking a single step forward. "The truth is. . . I've had my eye on you for quite some ti- no, wait, that sounds really creepy." The boy shook his head and frowned.
"Um, I just, really, really like you. . ." Kairi could sense the unease and embarrassment in his voice. It was a nice trick, but with the blade in plain sight to her, she wasn't being fooled. Just how many people had he said this to before attacking them? The she-cat lashed her tail in frustration. As soon as Cheshire Jr. revealed his switchblade, she would strike. If he got any closer to Alex, she would strike. The boy had been caught.

Could he be really telling the truth? Alex didn't know. It was almost too good to be true, and it seemed surreal. By "Having his eye on her for some time", that probably meant he knew about all of her fame and that was the real reason he liked her, if he truly did at all. But could he have possibly paid attention to her lyrics? She poured her heart out into them, but nobody even listened . . .
After processing this new information for a few seconds, Alex figured she should probably respond. If he truly did like her, she didn't want to leave him hanging. "Are . . . are you really telling the truth?" If he was, should she lie and say she likes him back? She definitely knew she would like something to happen between them, but she didn't really know him yet.
Wait. Alex, get your head together. Creeps make up weird stories all the time, and with all the tricks this kid plays, this could be another one. Make sure to stay on your guard, she thought, putting some sense into her mind. Thinking about him as a potential threat, she decided that if he comes any closer she will surround him with bright light, not enough to do any harm, just as a warning, and tell him to back up with a loud voice.

"Yes, yes of course! Why would I lie to you?" The desperation in Cheshire Jr.'s voice was slowly becoming more obvious. Thinking quickly, Kairi shifted into a snake and weaved her way through the uncut grass, remaining unseen. She remained directly behind the cat-boy, keeping her eyes focused on the switchblade he continued to hold tightly. "Th-The lyrics of your songs really hit home for me. I felt as though I could connect with you, that we had a lot in common. I really wanted to meet you in person, but was too nervous with so many people around. I thought that. . . That you wouldn't come if I asked you to meet me, given my shitty reputation. . ." The sickly sweet love story was going to make Kairi puke. How could anyone be fooled by this crap? She'd probably lose all faith in Alex if she did, but Cheshire was pretty cute. . .
Without her realizing it, Cheshire Jr. had taken another step toward his victim. "I just. . . really wanna get to know you better! I only really get to know who you are through your song lyrics, but. . . I want you to know me to!" Kairi resisted the urge to strike him down right then and there. Ever word that came out of his mouth sounded like a cheesey soap opera! But no matter how painful it was to listen to his fake love confession, Kairi had to wait for him to strike first. Explaining his antics to Alex with no visual proof wouldn't end in her favor.

What should she do? What COULD she do? Her options were limited. Trying to think up all the possibilities, Alex decided she could A) Decide this was all bs, temporarily blind him and run, B) Ask him to sing her one of her songs to see if he was telling her anything close to the truth, C) Ask him what he wants her to do and explain her side, D) moon him then run (she was actually quite pleased with this idea), E) break down crying and see his reaction, F) she could -- well, let's just say she figured out her options weren't so limited after all. Some were actually fairly good ones, but now she had to quickly decide which would be best, which would be harder. Alex was leaning towards crying. She could make up some silly story about family problems to see his true intentions. Plus, she had never heard of somebody attacking someone their age while crying . . . maybe it was worth a shot? And if worse came to worse and she was unable to use her powers, she did catch on to a few good ways of self defense during her drinking days. But what was her story going to be? Oh well, she could think of it while the tears were starting to drop. For once, her messy crying could actually be put into use. Hopefully he wouldn't start to think negatively of her, he was very attractive . . . Shaking her head mentally, Alex became more focused. Not even knowing what was powering them, tears started to fall from her face, and her eyes grew red and puffy.

Kairi watched in disbelief as large droplets of water spilled from Alex's eyes and down her face. She was. . . crying?! Of all the things she could have done, she chose to cry?! The snake-girl felt anger bubble up within her. She could have been strong and attacked Chesh, gotten angry, something, anything! And she chose this?! But what surprised her the most was Cheshire Jr.'s response to this. He put his switchblade away. It still stuck out a little from his back pocket, but only the wooden handle that looked more like a survival tool than a weapon. The cat-boy then walked up to Alex and attempted to pull her into a hug, rubbing her back to sooth her. This was clearly not what Kairi had expected to happen. Attacking the girl while she was weak and helpless would have suited Cheshire's personality perfectly, so why was he trying to comfort her. His flustered voice broke through Kairi's swirling thoughts. "I-I'm sorry! Did I say something wrong? I didn't mean to hurt or offend you!" Was he panicking?
Growing fed up with the soap opera act, Kairi slithered back into the forest to shift back into her cat form. And here I thought I'd finally put a stop to his attacks. . . Maybe what he's saying is true? The brown-furred she-cat poked her head around the tree she was hiding behind, still watching for any sign of malice. Five minutes were spent in semi-silence, save for the wind blowing through the park and rustling the leaves every now and then. It was strong enough, one time, that the swings began to rock back and forth, slowly. Suppressing a yawn, Kairi realized that her mother and brother would start to worry if she didn't return soon. I said I'd be home by eight. . . What time is it? Just as she was about to shift into her human to check her phone, an ominous laugh rang out through the park. It started off as a low chuckle, which Kairi hadn't picked up, until they started laughing in laugh fits. Wide awake, the cat-girl whipped around to see that Cheshire Jr. had pulled his hand back and opened his switchblade, ready to attack Alex. "Did you really think I cared about you? Were you that easy to fool?" His mood suddenly dropped to that of a monotonous fiend. Knowing that this was her chance, Kairi bolted out from behind the tree and launched herself at the cat-boy, screeching and digging her claws into his back.

Trying to see what exactly was happening through tears was a little hard, but Alex tried her best. What was Cheshire Jr. doing? It looked as if he was putting something in his pocket as he started towards her. And when he pulled her into a hug, she couldn't deny that it felt pretty good. The shirt he was wearing smelled surprisingly good. Maybe this wasn't a trick after all? When he asked about saying something wrong, Alex shook her head in his shoulder. "No, no . . ." She quietly stammered. Ah crap, now she had to think of a good reason . . . Her music! He respected that, right? "Things with my music are getting pretty hard, and I thought . . ." --she sniffled for effect-- "I would be able to get a couple beers here to soothe the nerves. After your confession and no alcohol, it just kinda all built up inside and came pouring out. But, I . . . I want to be with you." Hopefully, she looked up into his face. The reaction she wanted was not what she got at all, though. No, he started laughing. What should Alex do now? By the time the word 'fool' came out of his mouth, she had swung into gear, dropping low and moving her leg quickly to knock the legs out from under him. It worked, and as he came closer to the ground, she saw . . . a cat? Oh well, she didn't have time to think about it now. Surrounding her attacker with bright but not blinding light, she ran, blocking off any sound waves that came from her. And ran. To where? Alex didn't know. It seemed as if she was going farther into the woods. She could find her way out later, but right now she had to face the immediate danger. Once it was clear she had put quite a bit of distance between the danger and herself, she pulled out her phone. CRAP. No service. Doing a 180, Alex looked from where she came. It was pretty dark, and she could barely see her surroundings. As she was about to fill up the area around her with light, she heard a sound. Behind her. The opposite of where she came from. Slowly and silently, she turned around, not wanting to know what she would find.

Gravity shifted as the person Kairi was clinging onto had the feet swept out from under him. Thinking fast, she leaped back and shifted into a human midair. She landed on her feet, sliding back a bit before a near-blinding light caused her to cover her eyes with her arms. As quickly as the light had appeared, it was gone, and Cheshire Jr. was left sitting on the ground, cursing profusely, and rubbing his eyes. He'd dropped the switchblade in surprise when Alex attacked him; Kairi could see it glinting slightly, out of Chesh's reach. Anger swelled within her as she stomped forward and kicked the back of his head. The cat-boy whipped around, furious and confused. "What the fuck are you doing here?" He spat, getting to his feet. Kairi narrowed her eyes and frowned. "I came here to put an end to your stupid antics." She quickly scooped up the switchblade and closed it, slipping it into her pocket before continuing. "And now that I have your favorite blade, your father should be very interested in hearing how I acquired it."
For a split second, Kairi watched as a look of pure fear crossed Cheshire Jr.'s face, before it dropped back into one of anger. "Give. It. Back." He hissed through gritted teeth. Kairi laughed through her nose and smirked. "Not a chance." Without warning, she ran at him and, shifting into a cat, jumped and propelled herself forward using his shoulder. She ran in the same direction as Alex, hoping to find and help her. The area she'd escaped to had no street lamps, a mistake overlooked by the mayor, and Kairi shifted back into a human to call out to Alex. Running a little further, she spotted the small, dim light of a phone screen. "Hey!" Kairi called, slowing her pace so she wouldn't startle the other girl. "Are you alright?"

Alex quickly darkened her skin, changed her hair color to a nice ash gray, and made her bow teal when she saw that there was a figure. She didn't know who this was, and she didn't want to be recognized afterwards, whatever this encounter may bring. The person, who sounded female, asked if Alex was alright. How do I know that she's plotting with Cheshire Jr.? she said to herself. She didn't have many options, so she would just have to ask for help and be completely on guard. "Yeah, I'm fine, I just don't know where I am, and I'd prefer not to go back in the direction of that creep," Alex said, smirking at the title she gave Cheshire Jr. Waving her hand, Alex lit up the area with some red tinted light.
Just then, she had an idea. A brilliant, but evil, masterpiece. Didn't the Jabberwocky live in this park?
Alex could use her powers to create an incredible, booming sound, and direct it towards where Cheshire Jr. was. Lure the Jabberwocky there. Either he'd be smart and scamper away at the danger, or have to face the monster and pay for his attempted attack. Sure, it could seem like Alex was just a powerless little girl, but in reality, she was a fierce warrior. She fiddled with her hair while she thought about it. Getting distracted, she admired her gray hue, but then got back on track. It could cause a lot of problems, but it could also be fun . . . .
She started to make her move. Closing her eyes, she let all distractions fade away. She relaxed her shoulders and shook them out, then began to focus in, stirring up something deep within, and letting loose a high, shrill, scream. Only, nothing came out -- at least not where she was. Instead, it was completely magnified in the direction that both she and the other young woman came from. Finished, Alex quickly looked at the other person. She didn't want to be attacked, and swiftly decided it would be best to get away from her, especially after what she did. So, Alex took off, running in a rectangle of light allowing her to see, but completely soundless. At first, she ran away from the other female, but then she started to run back to what she thought was the direction of Cheshire Jr. Sure, he had tried to attack her, but she didn't want to see him seriously hurt. Her powers could interfere, if it need be.
