The powerful scent of burning objects danced in the air above the flames. The sky, once a peaceful black and filled with stars, had turned smokey with orange and red, showing no signs of "Heaven's Angels." The screams of the innocent echoed throughout as they tried to evacuate their homes and buildings. Nearby, on a ledge, in a tree, a pair of grey, watchful eyes mused at the dancing flames, relishing in the painful heat they gave off. Ah, how he loved to watch things burn! The grey-haired boy clapped and kicked his feet back and forth as he cheered on the smoke billowing from the fire; he wanted Heaven to smell what he had done! Suddenly, a large skyscraper crumbled and crashed to the ground, causing flames and debris to shoot out in all directions. As it did so, a loud laughter erupted from the boy, and he gripped the branch so he wouldn't fall off.
After another hour or so of watching the flaming mess, the boy, Vincent, grew tired of it. He jumped down from his tree and stood on the very edge of the ledge, his hands tucked away in his jacket pockets. Humans are so useless, he thought, watching a young couple run from the destruction and Hellfire. All they can do is run from their problems. Don't they even know how to fight the elements? Spinning on his heel, Vincent made his way back to the tree, skipping as he went. The tree seemed to have been dead for many decades, it's leaves had long since fallen, and the bark had been charred completely black. Vincent circled around the tree, searching for something. Eagerly, the boy reached out and pressed on a knothole in the center of the giant Oak. A dark red light shone through and formed the shape of a door, which Vincent dove head-first into. Suddenly, Vincent spread his wings, gray as the ash and smoke which billowed from the fires he loved so much. They slowed his fall until he was merely gliding down to the surface of the underworld.
He landed with a soft brush of soil as his shoes touched the bare ground. Folding back his wings, Vincent stepped toward a large, jet-black gate carved with patterns of swirls and skulls. Laying next to the gate, a colossal three-headed dog watched as Vincent approached him, and raised a head curiously. Vincent stroked the midnight blue fur on Cerberus' head before turning and opening the doors of Hell's Gate. He was welcomed with red. The sky, the ground, the dead trees, everything was dyed a different shade of red. Vincent walked for a considerable amount of time until he came to a crossroads. A single post with four signs stood in the center, each sign pointing to a different road. The sign that pointed toward Vincent read Hell's Gate, the sign pointing left read Souls, underneath, the sign pointing rightward read Demon's Residents, and the sign at the top, only visible when facing away from the right road, pointed away from Vincent, only read Lucifer. Vincent paused for only a moment before spinning on his heel and making his was to the Demon's Residents.
Practically skipping, a wide grin spread on Vincent's face as tall, silver buildings came into view. Home sweet home, he thought, waving to a few familiar faces. His house came into view as soon as Vincent left the taller buildings and moved to the outskirts. His father had always been a solitary man, preferring to stay away from others than interact with them. The only one to break through the barrier had been Vincent's mother, but he didn't want to think about it. Opening the door to his house, Vincent kicked off his shoes before making his way to the kitchen for something to eat. Demons didn't need to eat, but Vincent absolutely loved food. Finding a large bag of Cheetos, the gray-haired boy scarfed them down, enjoying the cheesy taste. After finding a bottle of Pepsi in the fridge, which he gulped down with ease, Vincent headed for his room to play some video games.
Suddenly, the sound of large footsteps echoed throughout the house. Freezing in place, Vincent felt his blood run cold. "Vincent, where have you been?" A deep voice bellowed from behind him. Turning to face his father, the gray-haired boy smiled up at him and laughed nervously. "Oh, y'know, visiting some friends," he lied, hoping his father would buy it. Unfortunately, Vincent was the absolute worst liar, and could never keep a straight face. Asher saw through his son's lie immediately, and glared down at him. "There have been reports of another town burning down on Earth without Lucifer's instructions. Was that you?"
"What? No way! I-I told you, I was with. . . Friends," Vincent continued to lie, determined to get out of this. His father sighed heavily and forcefully grabbed Vincent's shoulder. "I know you did that. You're only making it worse for yourself by trying the lie to me." The emphasis on trying got Vincent fuming. He knew he wasn't a good liar! The smile disappeared from his face and he glared at his father. "So what if I did it? It's not like that place was super important to the humans!" He spat, clenching his fists. He was a demon! Who was he to take orders? Asher just shook his head and sighed. "Didn't I tell you last time that the next time you did something like this I'd tell Lucifer? We've been lying to him for years about this."
At his fathers words, Vincent began to struggle and try to get away. He knew how ruthless and heartless the ruler of the Underworld was, and didn't want to be on the receiving end of his punishments. "Countless others have gotten into trouble because I've lied to Lucifer and shifted the blame to them," Asher continued, keeping a strong hold on his son's shoulder, "it's time you pay for your actions." The more his father talked, the angrier and more fearful Vincent became. "Since when were you so worried about the well being of others?" He yelled, still trying to pull away. "Who gives a crap if others get hurt? We're demons! It's what we do! Why should we worry about justice or the right thing and all that bull?!" A loud smack echoed throughout the house as Asher landed a blow on his son's cheek. Vincent's eyes widened, and tears began to form. Clutching the left side of his face, he stopped moving and stared down at his feet. "Never question me." His father's words hung in the air as the two demons stood in the hallway; no one moved. Asher removed his hand from Vincent's shoulder and moved it to his chin. Forcing his son to look at him he said, "this is the last time. Do it again and I swear to Lucifer I'll punish you myself."
Vincent watched his father disappear into another room, clenching his teeth and swearing under his breath. Turning around, he stomped up to his room and slammed the door. he didn't care if his father got mad. Crashing down on his bed, he lied there for a while, staring at the ceiling. Finally getting bored of doing nothing, he sat up and started up one of his many game consoles. Rubbing his cheek again, Vincent watched the opening sequence of the game and played for hours, not caring that it was dark or that his father was going to bed. He just played. What else could he do now that he wasn't allowed to burn? Grumbling to himself, he paused the game and stared out the window, wishing for the scent of smoke and crackling of flames. It felt cold and quiet without it. Clicking his teeth, he turned off the game and angry rearranged the covers for him to be under them. He wasn't going to get out of bed for a while.
{AN: Woo! It's finally done! Took me quite a few months to complete, but I'm really glad I did! Vincent is now another one of my precious babies~ *pets Vincent* ^^}
