Taylor sat down at a table, arriving late for lunch. She was just talking to a teacher about an assignment that seemed too easy, and was asking her if she could do something else. Of course the teacher was thrilled with the idea. She got a bag of chips out of her lunch, and starting crunching away. She wished she could have people sitting right by her, happy to include her in the conversation. But ever since she said she didn't support gay marriage, Kylie, the most popular bitch in school, immediately made sure she was looked down on, she hasn't had any friends from school. She pulled out her current book, The Infinite Sea. Once she finished the chapter, she looked at her watch to see if she had time to read another. She didn't, and she glanced around the room before going back to her lunch. She saw a pretty girl with blue hair she had never seen, and wondered if she was in any classes with her. After lunch she has Home ec, which she was looking forward to. After lunch period was finished, Taylor wound up in the Home ec classroom. Mr. Basil took role and then gave instructions on what to do. They were supposed to make blueberry pancakes, which Taylor knew how to make and had made plenty of times. She hoped she would get a nice partner, and not one of the snotty pops (popular kids).

Amy glanced down at her schedule to figure out where she needed to be. Home Ec with mr. Basil was next on the list. It was on the top floor, so she made her way to the stairs and through a hallway. She pushed open the door to the classroom a few seconds before a bell rang. She took her a spot at the back of the room and slumped in her chair. She rarely cooked anything, so she had no idea if she was good or not, or how she would do in the class. She hoped she was partnered with someone that actually knew how to make food.
Mr. Basil seemed like a nice fellow, and he explained what we were doing after calling role. After he was done explaining, he started calling off the pairs. Amelia drifted off to a comfortably spaced out state listening to Mr. Basil's voice. When she heard my name however, she snapped to attention so she could hear her partner's. "Taylor Richmond!" he called. She didn't recognize the name, but then again she didn't really expect to. Amy barely knew anyone there from her old school. She stood up and searched for anyone looking at her like they wanted her to go over to them.

Taylor saw the girl with the blue hair looking around, and went up to her. "Hi. I'm Taylor. Are you Amelia? I like your hair." She really liked her style. And Taylor knows you aren't supposed to judge people, but Amelia looked like the type that likes to read. Like me! Hopefully we could be friends this year! It would be nice to be able to talk with someone about girl things that's not my father! She went to one of the small kitchens and started pulling out supplies. Hopefully Amelia knows how to cook! "Do you know how to make pancakes?" Taylor asked.

"Huh? Oh, yeah, I'm Amelia. Actually, Amy is good, and thanks. About...my hair. And sorry... I don't really know how to cook." Amelia replied to the girl in front of her. She was a little bit shorter than her, and she had brown hair. She sounded pretty confident about the whole pancakes thing, so she hoped she had gotten lucky and ended up with someone that knew what they were doing.
She watched as the other girl --- Taylor, she reminded herself, gathered supplies. She wondered what she liked, and if maybe, just maybe, they could be friends. Or something like friends. She also tried to remember if she was in any other classes with her. Nothing cane to mind. Instead of standing there and being useless, Amelia decided to ask a question. "Sooo... Do YOU know how to cook?"

"Ummmmmmmmm . . . . Depends on what it is. Pancakes, yes. I usually need a recipe, but I can easily follow the recipes for food," Taylor said. She wasn't sure if she liked the way Amy talked, but she LOVED how her voice sounded. She got out bowls and measuring cups. "Can you mix the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar?" Taylor said, getting out all of the right measuring cups, tablespoons and teaspoons for the ingredients she just said. She moved to the freezer and got out blueberries to put in. She got out two pans and put them on the front burner. She then went up to Mr. Basil and asked him if she could make orange juice with it. He replied with a definitely, so she went to the freezer. There wasn't any juice concentrates, so she got a couple of oranges and a bowl and started squeezing them to get the juice. She looked at their progress and her mouth started to water. YUM she thought.

Amy was very glad that Taylor knew what she was doing. She seemed really nice, and Amy was glad they had ended up as partners. She was definitely happy she hadn't ended up with a snotty rich kid. She smiled slightly and went to work mixing the ingredients Taylor had instructed her to. First she poured the flour into a big bowl, followed closely by sugar, salt, and baking powder. By the time everything was mixed, Amelia had somehow managed to get white dust all over the counter, in her hair, and, well, pretty much all over herself and her work space.
"Uh... Something happened with the flour. It sort of went everywhere." She told Taylor, who was squeezing orange juice into a bowl. Mmmm orange juice. She thought. She was in the middle of a flour emergency, but she couldn't help it. Amy loved orange juice, but her dad barely ever bought it for her. and now they were making the fresh squeezed kind. Her mouth started watering. Taylor appeared not to have heard Amy's first alert about the white powder everywhere, so she tried again, this time tapping her on the shoulder first with one floury finger.

"Ooohhh. Hmmm. Do you mind getting your shirt a little wet?" Taylor asked, looking at the powdery mess. How could she have gotten into such a mess? She quickly got a cloth from the sink. Without waiting for a reply, she handed her the cloth and said, "Start dabbing at your shirt with this. It will get it a little wet, but not uncomfortably so." She couldn't tell the expression on Amelia's face. "Do you want to have lunch together tomorrow?" Taylor asked Amelia. She thought she saw her face light up, but she couldn't tell for sure. Maybe she doesn't like me. Taylor started to worry.

Amelia took the proffered cloth and started dabbing the powder off her exposed skin and pants. She had an extra shirt in her locker she could change into, so she did't really need to clean her top. "Thanks. I honestly have no idea how the flour got everywhere." She felt her face start to heat up when she saw Taylor's face at the whole mess. She looked completely shocked and confused. Amy bet something along the lines of 'How the heck did she manage to make a huge mess like that?' was going through her head. Once she finished getting the white powder off herself, she folded the fabric and started swiping off the counter.
After a few moments, Amy heard Taylor ask if she wanted to sit with her at lunch the following day. Her face lit up for an instant at the thought of maybe making a friend, but she quickly wiped the look away. She must be joking. Why would she want to sit with me? I just met her and made a huge mess. She thought, but what came out of her mouth was "No. I'm already sitting with someone else." As soon as the word left her mouth, she cringed. Why in the world did I say that? She asked herself. I don't have anyone to sit with, and Taylor seems pretty nice... I can't believe I told her I did. That doesn't make any sense at all.

A look of disappointment crossed Taylor's face. Amelia must not like me. If she did, she would say, 'You can, but I am sitting with some other people, too.' I thought I would be able to be friends with her. She could feel heat come to her face. Ugh. Not now. How embarrassing. She went back to her orange juice and let her hair fall over her face. Taylor got two glasses and filled them with the juice. She took a testing sip, and was pleased. She took the bowl from Amelia and put in the rest of the ingredients. She turned on the burners and put oil on the pans. Once it was spread around, Taylor put on pancake batter. She started flipping the pancakes at the right time. Consequently, she got perfect golden ones. She put them on a plate and into the oven to keep them warm. Taylor got out granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and some water. She started making cinnamon syrup. Once she was done with that, she got out heavy whipping cream. She got out the beaters and some more granulated sugar and vanilla extract. She made whipped cream. She got the pancakes out of the oven and set everything out, buffet style.
